Cooking for Seniors
Driven by limited resources, low and fixed income older adults are often faced with an unspeakable decision; to purchase life saving medications or food. In Hampton Roads, Virginia 1 out of every 4 seniors is food insecure; (according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture) and the number of food insecure seniors is projected to increase by 50% over the next decade when the youngest of the baby boom generation reaches age 60. In response to this critical need, Primeplus provides hot home cooked meals for low-income seniors that follow nutrition guidelines developed by the U.S. Older American’s Act. In the past twelve months our program has experienced a 30% increase from 720 to over 1,000 meals each month.
In addition to support from Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia, Primeplus has a great partner with your local Food Lion who provides generous support for the needs of seniors in our community. The Food Lion Feeds program has supported Primeplus with a grant of funds for several years.
All community members aged 50 and over are welcome to join us for our week day lunch program. This program provides a hot home-style lunch between 11:30 am and 1 pm.
There is no charge for seniors to have lunch, however, we ask those who can to consider making a donation to help us cover the cost of the meals. Typically our members will donate $5.
Our goal is for no senior to go without. In addition to our home cooked meals we can support the needs of seniors in the case of a weather emergency or financial need. Please come by and talk with one of our staff about your needs and let us work with you to support your needs.
